What to do in a home burglary situation

It’s the middle of the night and you are awakened by a noise in your home. You hear more noises. Your heart begins to pound and your mind starts to race. What would you do?

This would be a terrifying experience so it pays to have a plan and know what to do if you ever find yourself in this situation.

If you are able to leave the house, go for help and call police this could be the best course of action. If you are unable to leave then you could lock yourself in a room, barricade the door with furniture and heavy objects, call the police and wait till they arrive.

If you are confronted by an intruder try to stay calm and avoid direct eye contact. Raise your hands to shoulder level as this appears compliant and it also gives you the ability to have your hands ready for defence. Most burglars will flee when confronted, but if they are surprised their reaction could possibly be a violent one.

Home burglaries are unfortunately a fact of life but there are a number of things you can do to prevent an intruder gaining access to your home. Statistics show that homes with security systems are less likely to be burgled so a good security system is well worth the investment and they are much more affordable than you may think.

A security system can also offer other benefits like security cameras and duress alarms which contact security and the police when activated in an emergency situation. The cost of your home and contents insurance may also be reduced if your home has a security system.

Good window and door locks, quality security doors and window screens will make it a lot more difficult for a burglar to gain access to your home. Sensor lights around the perimeter of your home is also a good investment and will often scare off anyone that triggers them to turn on.

A dog is another great deterrent as often they are aware of someone outside the home before you are and they also make great companions.

If you are worried about your home being burgled and would like more information on how a security system can help you feel more secure, please give us a call on 0417 384 787 or contact us by email.
