In December 2017, the Geelong Advertiser reported on Geelong’s burglary hot spots with new data released from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria. The RACV data states that the suburbs of Barwon Heads, Geelong, Armstrong Creek and East Geelong rank in the top ten for burglaries in 2017 with the Victorian average being 1 in 69 homes. This equates to a home being burgled once every 15 minutes in Victoria.
It suggested that burglars are attracted to homes in new housing estates because they have new appliances and are often adjacent to vacant blocks which makes it easier for quick entry and exit. And with most people at work during the day these newer suburbs can be easy targets. That being the case, a home security system should be one of the first additions to any new home. With back-to-base security system monitoring as well as self-monitoring options available, wouldn’t you sleep better at night knowing that someone could be onsite in minutes if there was a security breach.
With 42 per cent of burglaries committed through forced entry it also makes sense to use good quality locks on your doors and windows and take your home security to the next level with the installation of a good quality alarm system. Interestingly the analysis also said that one in six break-ins were occurring through an unlocked door or window which means residents could be doing a lot more to prevent these occurrences just by locking doors and windows before leaving the home and while at home.
Statistics show that homes with security systems are less likely to be burgled and if you have your system monitored you may be eligible for a substantial discount on you home and contents insurance
